IACUC Administrators Best Practice Meeting Scheduled for San Antonio Texas

Since 2005, IACUC Administrators have been formally meeting to discuss common practices that are routinely used to satisfy regulatory requirements.   Attendees from all disciplines (e.g. industry, academia and government) have combined their efforts to identify specific practices that can be used, for example, to conduct program reviews and facility inspections.  Their brainstorming efforts have led to common practices for establishing VVC policies, ensuring protocol and grant congruency, operating successful Occupational Health and Safety Programs, tracking animals used in research, and fulfilling institutional responsibilities as it relates to collaborating with sister organizations.

An IACUC Administrators’ Best Practice meeting will be held on February 27-28 in San Antonio, TX.  The meeting will be co-sponsored by the IACUC Administrators Association (IAA) and OLAW.  Attendees will have the unique opportunity to meet many of their peers and learn how their colleagues satisfy regulatory requirements at their institutions.  The discussions will not focus specifically on the animal welfare laws and policies, but rather methodologies used to satisfy them.

What is the Best Practice Meeting format?

The meetings continue to be facilitated by co-moderators with colleagues from OLAW, the USDA and AAALAC International present to participate in open discussions.  Attendance is limited to approximately 50 individuals with roundtable seating arrangements.  This structure has been proven over the years to facilitate attendee conversation and participation.

The meeting is typically held over a two-day period with each discussion session being approximately an hour.  Networking luncheons are held on both days.  The information sessions are initiated by an attendee’s 10-minute presentation.  Immediately following the presentation, attendees, regulators, and AAALAC representatives engage in open discussions.  Our colleagues from OLAW, the USDA and AAALAC provide guidance on the resolutions discussed by attendees.

Meeting Agenda:   The meeting agenda is typically developed through suggestions made by the program participants on their registration forms.  Attendance to our meeting will be at no charge (but we are limited to 50 attendees).  Please secure your spot by emailing wggreer@umich.edu.  To help us develop an agenda that directly address topics you wish to discuss, we ask that you provide at least one potential topic for discussion in your registration email.

In your registration email, I asked that you please include your name, email address, your title and the institution you represent.
