DESCRIPTION: \;\n \n Topic Summary\n \n Research\, instruc tion and testing activities that involve vertebrat e animals are regulated by federal\, state\, local and institution regulations and policies. \; Approximately 85% of the animals used for research are laboratory mice and rats (National Associatio n for Biomedical Research). \; Consequently\, common and best practices for reviewing and perfor ming activities involving these species and other traditional laboratory animals have been establish ed due to ongoing repetition among institutions.&n bsp\; \n \n Along with the expectations for overse eing laboratory animal research\, there exists the same expectations for research activities involvi ng wild vertebrate animals in the field. \; In some cases\, Institutional Animal Care and Use Co mmittees and Administrators have significant exper ience reviewing\, approving and overseeing laborat ory animal research\, but they lack the resources to assess thoroughly the unique circumstances asso ciated with wildlife research. \; In fact and under some circumstances\, IACUCs and administrato rs attempt to apply the same philosophies applied to wildlife activities that they apply to animal a ctivities associated with biomedical research.&nbs p\; \; \; \n \n There are unique circumsta nces associated with wildlife research activities.  \; In addition to satisfying the foundational expectation of ensuring the best welfare for rese arch animals\, activities involving wildlife are a lso subject to state permitting requirements\, ext raordinary occupational health and safety risks\, and other unique circumstances only associated wit h wildlife research. \; \; \; \n \n Du ring this webinar\, the presenter will introduce u nique challenges associated with wildlife research . \; Attendees will help to identify various u nique wildlife associated challenges. \; We wi ll identify techniques used by organizations that frequently review and oversee wildlife studies\, a nd discuss some tried and tested ideas for the rev iew\, approval and oversight of wildlife research.  \; Collectively attendees will discuss the to pic by\, for example\, posing questions to the spe akers and other attendees\, offering effective ide as\, and ultimately identifying effective and prac tical processes for managing and overseeing wildli fe research. \;  \; \; \;\n \n Mee ting Co-Facilitators\n \n Ron E.
